About Us

Founded in 2001 as a tenant association for the Paul G Stewart Senior Residences and a local service provider for the Masjid Al-Ihsan mosque, Bronzeville Helping Hand (BHH) is a community development corporation serving Bronzeville and the greater South Side. BHH offers healthy food and clothes for those in need, job training, education, transitional support for returning citizens, and a breadth of year-round programming. BHH believes that our past is our future's foundation, so our helping hand is always responsive to Bronzeville’s unique local needs, histories, and cultural contexts.

Stewarded by its first Director Haroon Ali, Bronzeville Helping Hand built unshakable trust in several of the Paul G Stewart buildings through its tenant organizing. Additionally, crossover services with Masjid Al-Ihsan included a variety of counseling offerings, literacy courses, educational outreach, and intergenerational community programming. Now directed by Aaliyah Ali, the organization’s next chapter is deepening her father’s mission and bringing renewed power to the people of Bronzeville in a time of rapid development.

Under its new leadership, BHH is focusing on the impact of three pillars – housing, culture, and health – in its daily operations:

  • Building on its legacy as a trusted tenant association, BHH is organizing the remainder of the Stewart Buildings and expanding to nearby apartment complexes that need tenant support and community programming

  • Building on a a legacy of intergenerational cultural programming, BHH is expanding its flagship Bronzeville Smooth Jazz Festival and launching an Emerging Black Artist Exhibition series

  • Building on a legacy of holistic health, BHH is expanding its commitment to connecting neighbors to critical health and wellness services through targeted outreach, canvassing, and integration into its cultural programming
